A ROLLING motor vehicle hitting a powerpole caused a grassfire on private land on Kosciuszko Rd near Berridale on Saturday.
The fire threatened the safety of the driver - who had been extracted from the vehicle by NSW Police - and attending emergency services personnel, but was brought under control by NSW Rural Fire Service brigades.
As a result of the fire, which covered 14 hectares, Kosciuszko Rd was closed to traffic for several hours.
The driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics at the scene and taken to hospital.
NSW Police was the lead agency for the event but was unavailable for comment in time for publication.
NSW RFS Snowy Monaro District Inspector, Langdon Gould, who was duty officer on Saturday, said Cooma RFS received a call at 2.48pm to attend a car accident on the Kosciuszko Rd, west of the intersection of Rocky Plains Rd.
"While crews from Cooma and Berridale were en-route, further advice was received was that a car had left the road, rolled and struck a power pole, resulting in a grass fire at the incident location," he said.
RFS crews from Cooma and Berridale responding to the accident were then joined by brigades from Dry Plains and Rocky Plains to support Fire and Rescue NSW, Police and Ambulance NSW on the scene."
Inspector Gould said police and ambulance officers were able to remove the occupant out of the crushed motor vehicle. He said the grassfire was rapidly approaching the car and threatened the driver and police and ambulance crews.
"Crews upon initial arrival provided protection to the patient, police and ambulance , with additional crews working to contain the grass fire," he said.
The fire was contained approximately two hours later, however the motor vehicle had been impacted by fire.
Essential Energy crews entered the site when safe to do so and replaced the power pole.
