Last Wednesday April 17, The Snowy Monaro Youth Council held a Youth Homelessness Awareness day in both Cooma and Jindabyne.
A series of four installation displays were erected across Cooma at the corner of Vale and Sharp Streets, the Visitors Centre, The Hub and the old St George bank. The displays included tents and other items and scenes associated with homelessness. Each display included information panels detailing facts and statistics about youth homelessness. It was some of these facts that passers-by found most shocking.
According to the 2016 census, youths aged 12-24 make up 32 percent of all homeless people in NSW. More than 60 percent are under the age of 35. Most of these homeless youth are living in ‘severely crowded’ dwellings, supported accommodation for the homeless, or couch-surfing.
