‘Everyone, Every Story’ is the theme for Cooma 2020 Australia Day

2019 Australia Day Awards recipients.

At the request of the Snowy Monaro Regional Council, Cooma Lions Club have taken on management of activities for the 2020 Australia Day, this coming Sunday 26 January.  The theme for this year is ‘Everyone, Every Story’ and the Lions Club are promoting Australia Day as a time for our community to come together to reflect and celebrate the Aussie spirit, and honour and support those who are facing extraordinary hardship.

A  comprehensive program for the day has been developed together with the Council, Cooma Car Club, Cooma Rotary with many local individuals contributing their time and talents.  The day will kick-off at 7:30am with an outstanding Australia Day breakfast at Cooma Car Club Clubhouse.  The menu includes both continental and a full cooked breakfast of sausages, bacon, eggs, baked beans, grilled tomatoes, hash browns and grilled tomatoes – all for $12 and $6 for kids under 14.  The atmosphere is sure to be inviting with Heather Anoleck providing background music.  The proceeds from the breakfast will be donated to bushfire relief.

Various activities and attractions in Centennial Park including live music by Jay Podger, kids’ games run by the Monaro High School Leo Club, Rotary barbecue and community displays such as the car club and emergency services will kick off from 10AM.  A highlight will be the now traditional ‘cutting of Sooty’s cake’ at 11:45 to honour former Mayor of Cooma, Lion John ‘Sooty’ Field AOM. Sooty celebrated his birthday on January 26 and for many years, donated a massive cake to the community to celebrate in the park.  Cooma Lions Club is honoured to continue this tradition in his memory with the blessing of his family.  Cooma Lions would like to thank Woolworths Cooma who have generously donated the cake for the occasion and Lion Jeanette Nassar, who will ice and decorate it to produce an edible masterpiece in the shape of Australia for the whole crowd to share.
